“Oh, sweet land, I’ve missed ya so!” cried one of the crew as the last of the goblins came ashore. The middle-aged man dropped to his bony knees, weeping with joy as he ran his blistered fingers through the dark red grains.

Many of the crew shared the same sentiment, relieved that their nausea would abate for a time. They beamed and cackled, scampering about like energetic children, leaving four-toed footprints in the sand. Only when Darzul raised his voice in protest of their chaos did they still themselves and messily assemble before him.

“Everyone’s accounted for, Captain,” Theo remarked as he took his place at the orc’s side. Darzul had been hesitant to bring the human along. He didn’t much care for leaving his new ship in the hands of what goblins remained aboard, but his first mate insisted on accompanying him. “Even if we’ve caught the scent of this wench, you can’t go rampagin’ ‘cross all of Pysia to get to her,” he’d told him. “Besides, what are they gonna do? Steal your ship? They don’t know how to helm it, and who’d be willin’ to buy one of the emperor’s ships from a pack of goblins? It’ll be as safe as a leper’s chastity.”

Unpleasant imagery aside, it wasn’t so the thought of the goblins stealing away with his ship that troubled him. They didn’t have the stones. But they were foolish creatures, and he could only imagine what sort of trouble they might get into unattended. Human gunpowder was less refined than its orcish counterpart, but it was still volatile enough to see his new vessel in pieces should some reckless fool decide to enjoy a pipe down in the magazine. The last thing he needed was to return to Voranthium and beg for another ship. If he kept accruing debts, he’d be stuck working for the humans until he was nothing but a green raisin with tusks. “Don’t go scurrying off, men,” Darzul told the eleven that came ashore. No, not my men. My men are dead and gone.

“Where ya want us, boss?” Pry asked, fiddling with the silver chain about his neck. “I can get the lads in order.” Were it an orc wearing that sycophantic smile, he would have beaten it off of their face.

Instead, Darzul turned to Theo. “Tell me of this isle before I turn eleven into ten.”

The bartender scratched at his jaw, plucking a louse from his beard. “‘Round here, on the western side, you got mostly farms. There’s a lot that grows here that won’t take anywhere else. From what I hear, Duke Elrin has grown quite fat and happy on what noblemen are willin’ to pay for Pysia’s bounty.”

“You know the land, then?”

“I know the port, Saltrock, but not the inner isle,” Theo said as he produced a map, studying it with a furrowed brow. “From the looks of it, so long as we pick a direction and head inland, it shouldn’t be too far ’til we find one o’ them farms I mentioned.
